Jeremiah Bush My First Time

It was late morning on a weekday in August, and It was my second shift with my new partner Bobby. The day was going rather slow, and we had only had one call so far. It wasn’t very serious, and after we cleared the hospital we were sent to post at Lucy’s panadería. The assignment was not for any pastry purposes but rather district coverage. Lucy’s was the half way point between our response area, and that of our sister station to the north. When ever coverage got low, you could guess someone wou… Continue

Sam Norwich City Cutbacks

Our EMS and Fire Fighting services are facing major cuts as the city is bankrupt. We have even been told we may lose our individual health insurance but not our jobs. Of course what can we do. It's not like there are lots of communities nearby needing EMS services. We are stuck, like many Americans. It would be nice if congress can bailout our small towns like the bailed out Wallstreet. They need to fix health ca… Continue

the Happy Medic A new interview show, driven by us!

Hot on the heels of what is sure to be the biggest thing in EMS since MAST pants (I think that came out wrong) is a new interview show from the creative minds behind the Chronicles of EMS.

They call it Chronicles of EMS:A Seat at the Table and it is something the like of which our profession, our industry, our little club we call the EMS community has never seen before.

the Happy Medic The Chroniclesof EMS Pilot Episode Premiere!

Producer and Paramedic Ted Setla has announced the premiere event for the Chronicles of EMS, the new EMS Reality series. Mark Glencorse (http://999medic.com) and myself spent a week living in each other's systems to make a comparison between the North East Ambulance Service in Newcastle upon Tyne and the San Francisco Fire Department. Ted's cameras followed Mark on his adventures as a documentary at first, then it became something so much more. We hope to trav… Continue

Bryan Fass A Little Help Please

Responders and readers, I have and continue to put a lot of time and effort into this Blog and the Fit Responder program. However, when you go to school for sports medicine they do not teach internet advertising and marketing. So I need some assistance. I enjoy speaking/presenting/lecturing/teaching at Conferences, Symposium, CME Sessions, Associations and Meetings. But it is often difficult to get noticed or recommended for these events. So, thank you to those of you who have recommended me fo… Continue

Bryan Fass Stretch of the week

Responders, as I continue to get questions from readers and folks in some of my talks I thought it necessary to give you one of my favorite injury prevention stretches. It is a hip and Pirformis stretch. But I warn you that it’s difficult to do. Find a surface that allows you to lay your leg flat and keep your spine straight and rigid. As always hold the stretch for 60 seconds, remember that a stretch should be moderately uncomfortable and not painful. Do this stretch 2 times a day every day whi… Continue

Health Care for Camps & Rec. Medical care at athletic events

Another high school football player dies while on the field.... Well, it hasnt happened here in Los Angeles since, uh...October 2009. But it has happened enough times where someone should take a hint. Years ago teams had doctors or nurses or medics on the field as a precautionary measure. Today all that has stopped due to budget cuts in the city and in the district (LAUSD). 6 out of 8 kids that died this year could have been saved with proper CPR administered immediatly upon realizing the stud… Continue

Bryan Fass MISCONCEPTIONS

Responders, it has dawned upon me that there are still a lot of misconceptions regarding fitness and injury prevention in EMS. I just gave 3 presentations at EMS Expo in Atlanta, GA. It was a great trade show with a group of fantastic speakers and presenters. What stands out from my experience at EMS Expo are the misconceptions surrounding injury prevention and our profession. As I spoke about, at any one time up to 10% of our workforce is out of work, having suffered an injury. But when surveye… Continue

Dave Hayes Distractions, Dreams and a Surprise Healing

When the weather turns cool, cloudy and wet in the northwest - our call volume usually drops off. I'm still waiting for the change. It was a busy weekend on my unit. I've been drinking a lot of coffee to help keep me going. Somehow it's losing it's effect. I find myself very tired in the middle of the day, dozing off while sipping a cup of Starbucks - I hate that. Friday was busy. We ran steady most of the day. I had a lot of distractions - people calling me asking me to fix their problems. Bei… Continue

MedicMark THIN GREEN LINE

Maybe this belongs on the "license plate thread" But there was Sooooo much traffic on that ( and other threads on this site) blog that I believed that this topic could stand alone. The Police started it all with the "Thin Blue Line" designating a solidarity in the risk that the officers take every day to life and limb. Then Fire came added on with the " Thin Red Line" series wanting to show the same alliance. Durring my Web surfing I came across a reference to The "Thin GREEN Line". This includ… Continue

Bryan Fass Cave Man Posture

Responders, I have spent the better part of a beautiful weekend here in NC hunched over the computer working on my presentations for Atlanta, Iowa, Virginia etc. A few 3 hour lectures is a lot of talking! No matter how good your postural stability and endurance is gravity and repetitive strain will eventually win. So the stretch of the week is one of my favorites. It is a Latissimus/back/shoulder and hip stretch. As always hold for 60 sec., remember to breathe and relax into the stretch.… Continue

Jennifer Ganson HIPAA violation

I understand that working in a small rural dept, that pretty much everyone knows everyone and its hard to keep things confidential. But one bad apple can spoil the bushel. We have an EMT that is relativly new to EMS, that has started sharing info with her family who then in turn tells other comunity members. When asked about it, she does not fess up. But we all then look bad to the public for her running her mouth maliciously or not. How do we stop her? Continue

Bryan Fass Diet Tracking

Just so all my responder friends do not get the idea that I spent an idle holiday weekend relaxing on the lake I added 32 pages of new content to the Fit Responder Book and expanded the program. I added a substantial section on Nutritional tracking. Tracking what you consume every day will lead to healthier eating habits and thus reduced weight. I included a weeks worth of daily tracking logs and wellness goals. I also drastically expanded the resistance band section of the program. Everyone tha… Continue

Debbie Spencer Mann Station Fire, SOCAL

To give you some perspective on what a monstrous fire that the Station Fire has become, consider some of the statistics as they relate to the area it has already consumed. There are 640 acres to one square mile. Per the Angeles National Forest website, the entire ANF is around 650,000 acres or around 1000 square miles. The fire has already consumed at least 105,000 acres or 164 square miles, with containment probably 2 weeks out. This means that the fire has already affected 1/6 of the entire An… Continue
