There has been a change to the skill sheet for bleeding control/shock management skill sheet. They added applying a tourniquet. You can print off a copy of the new skill sheet if you go to nremt.org, go to ems professionals, and click on exam coordinator documents.

Thanks, Leann!!!!!!!
Here is a statement from DEMST at least for the upcoming test site, if that will/when it changes I'm sure it will be communicated to us well before.

DEMST stated that the tourniquet is something that a student may or may not do. "If they choose not to use a tourniquet they will not be penalized." It is just an accepted standard by the American College of Surgeons.

Here is the statement the Registry has:

BLEEDING CONTROL AND SHOCK MANAGEMENT REVISION

The NREMT has revised all Bleeding Control and Shock Management skill evaluation instruments to reflect the recommendations by the American College of Surgeons. This change was previously announced in July 2008 and is supported by research published in Prehospital Trauma Life Support. “If external bleeding from an extremity cannot be controlled by pressure, application of a tourniquet is the reasonable next step in hemorrhage control.” (Salomone, J. and Pons, P. (2007). Mosby-Elsevier. ( St. Louis , MO ) pp. 180 – 181). Additional bleeding control and shock management questions based on the revised recommendations continue to be pilot tested and placed in the item banks.

Current skill evaluation instruments, including the updated Bleeding Control sheet are available online (EMS Professionals, Exam Coordinator Documents) or by clicking here. If you have further questions regarding practical examination standards, please contact Rob Wagoner, Associate Director or Gabe Romero, Examination Coordinator)
Thanks for the update.
Thanks Curt for the additional information. Just wanted to give a heads up to all ND EMS Instructors who might not have been aware of the changes that were made to the bleeding/shock management skill sheet in January.
Thanks for the udate Leann!
