In the past few days, I have had a few discussions with other EMS professionals from around the state about the idea of going through the process of have EMS license plates made similar to those that Firemen have. It is something those of us in the rural areas, especially, could find useful since we sometimes respond to scenes in our personal vehicles. I was on 1 scene when another EMT stopped to offer assistance at an MVA and the HP officer was trying to send her on her way, but fortunately we knew each other so she was able to get my attention to ask if I needed help. I think with special plates, that might happen less often. What does everyone think, is this something that EMS professionals in the state should pursue? Does anyone know what is included in the process?

Hi all
I live in Wisconsin but still call ND home and I have EMS plates over here. For my pickup they cost $115. The State has the belief that they need to charge double to get them. The extra goes to the DOT not like other specialty plates the recieve the difference in charge.
If societies believes that EMS is important they would let us have for free the plate and the yearly cost for a primary vehicle.
While you are at it try to get the state to give a income tax break against what you recieve for doing EMS. I believe there are several states out east that do!

Best of luck getting it changed. I remember the Blue light thing of the early 80's when I was still living there. Then it was the Fire services against it. Over here we can have red lights and sirens in personal vehicles.
Maria,
I think this is an AWESOME idea! In fact I was just thinking about the same thing the other day (must be that great minds think alike -- hehe haha). I don't know what the process is or what the cost would be. I will ask around see if I can come up with anything.
