Well, I survive the first outing without need for life-flight!

I learned two things...dismounting is tougher than I remember--only one little knee boo-boo..;-)

You use entirely different muscles riding outside as opposed to stationary inside!

I must second the practicing while drinking part! lol The first time I tried to ride and drink when I went to put the water bottle back I missed the cage, dropped it and then promptly ran over the bottle. =)

One thing for all of you guys that are just starting riding that may help. When you go out concentrate on your pedal stroke. When we were all kids we rode bikes and we would stand up to make it up the hills. This was only using our quads to pedal with cause we were not clipped in. Now with clips when you pedal you push from top to bottom and pull with hamstrings from bottom to top. Try to get to where there is no top or bottom it is just one constant smooth circle. Also use your gears, if its to hard gear down. Set a smooth cadence and keep pedaling. Also practice drinking while riding, it sounds silly but during the ride you have to drink and possibly eat while pedaling. When I say eat I mean using gel shots, or what ever you use for energy. But back to pedaling just remember to push and pull, be smooth and constant, set a pace. Just ride and enjoy yourself! See you in NY.

Jules, first ride on my bike today not in the house. Totally a different kind of pedaling if found out. Have fun.

Well, went and finally bought a bike, shoes, etc. I think I'm set. Now I just have to actually balance on it and ride beyond the 15 miles a day I've been doing in my living room. Tamie, if you have any pain med left, I might need ya to send it to me.;-)

I'll let you know tomorrow if I survive my first outing!

Beau,
I found that interval workouts work best for me. Go a set distance at a decent pace then step it up to max for a set distance. Then back to easy going yet again. Hope this helps.

Hey, everyone got home from work this morning and took my bike off the spinner and out for a ride. Just want to see how it felt on the road and it was great. Was just out for 10 miles working on shifting and clipping in and out. The only problem was clipping back after a stop kept slipping off the pedal. There is still alot of sand and gravel on the roads along with all the pot holes. It was a fun short ride alot different from pedaling on the spinner. See you all soon in the Big City.

Kerry, The ride meets at Jacobi in the Bronx (the only part of NYC on the continental USA) It goes through Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island if it will follow the route used last year. You "out of towners" will have an awsome tour of the City.

I saw that we will be meeting a second group at Jacobi hospital?? Are we still riding through parts of NYC?
