Yes I did get left behind "somewhere in Maryland?" Thanks for bringing up those painful memories DJ, now I will need some hydration to replace my tears from that traumatic experience!:-) Everyone doesn't need to worry about that this year, we have addressed that and it won't happen again.

Shane you mention not leaving anyone behind but what happened to you in the middle of nowhere? Just a thought! As for everyone else DON'T worry everyone will make it to Roanoke. Shane just didn't want to share his "hydration supplement" Can't wait to see everyone next month!

OK Guys here goes my attempt to help.

First I need to address Will and Jens comments 'bout my cage holding mason jars. Its not my fault that the "hydration supplement"I choose eats through the plastic of camel backs and sport bottles. AND as I recall Will you seemed to enjoy that "hydration supplement" on several occasions, so don't knock it since you love it :-)

To yáll flat landers- what Chris is talking about I would suggest yáll use your big front ring for training. It is harder to pedal but since you don't have any hills use this as help. Remember to push and pull or you will burn out your quads early.

To all first timers- RELAX this is a memorial ride NOT a race. We start the ride together and we will finish in Roanoke TOGETHER. We will not leave anyone behind. When we are in the cities we ride in formation staying together. When we are on some of the out lying areas we ride in tour formation which means you can ride at your on pace. There will always be a vehicle in front and one in rear. In addition to that, this is a supported ride. That means if you get to a point where you need a break you can ride a support vehicle to the next stop then start riding again. You need to train for the ride but I don't want anyone to feel worried or pressured about the ride. It will be one of the most memorable events of your career. So everyone just keep doing what your doing and get saddle time cause that will help more than anything cause when we spend all day in the saddle you get sore. So saddle time helps as much as anything else. When your training remember "Pain is just weakness leaving the body!" Have fun and we will see yáll soon.

If these April Showers and thunderstorms don't leave the area I'm going to have to set my trainer in the bed of a pickup and finish the ride that way.

Thanks for your sacrifice Jen! :-)

OK, I am gonna help out all of you and let you know that I have purposely unconditioned myself. Yup, no pedalling, no CORE training, no YOGA - just so I can understand where you are all coming from and remain among the newbies. So as you blow by me this year - remember, I did it for you. Cuz sacrifice is what it is all about.

Hello All, To all of you first year riders, concerned about the hills. I also live at sea level and ride one of the most difficult bikes to ride on hills ( a recumbent). When the hills become a bit much for me I just get off the bike and walk. Use your gears and conserve your energy as much as you can. There will be times when you will look ahead at a hill and say "there's no way" but you will, because there are over a hundred others helping you along the way. You have received very sound advice from seasoned riders, they know what their talking about. You will also be amazed at the camaraderie from this wonderful group of people. Remember we will all start and finish together. Looking forward to seeing all of you in a few weeks.

I feel much the same way Chris. I haven't ridden since I was a kid except on a stationary bike until last week. I got back on a bike because of this ride and what it means. I'm from Iowa..what we call hills here are pretty much bumps in the road out there. I've decided I'll just do what I can and try to push farther each day. I also know I probably won't be able to do the mountains, but I'll see how it goes, one day at a time. I'm looking forward to making new friends who won't care if I can ride the whole route or only a bit each day and mostly, I'm excited to be a part of honoring our own and bringing positive attention to EMS!

Here are my thoughts and concerns. I'm new to bicycle riding, < 1 year. I started back up (rode everywhere as a kid) because of this ride. I have received advise from Shane and Andy and I have been putting in time in the saddle and I can get in and out of my pedals with killing myself. I am a little concerned about the mountains. I ride different routes all the time and I think "boy that is really hilly" but I must face facts. I live in Mississippi. The highest point in my state is 806 feet. I do pedal in low gears as Shane suggested but I also try to ride in the right gears for the terrain around here. I am looking forward to this ride and meeting all of you.

CORE; the mid-section you mean! And the stability muscles plus the "love handles". Get an Exercise Ball at the big box store. Many come with a poster and or a DVD. Ok, I use my ball daily- I have to because of a 5 year old back injury and I kayak-paddle and race a bit. I think every EMT should have one cause the CORE will be the plan B when the back needs additional or extra support. By the way, I am bringing one to the ride. Don't leave home without it.
