I gotta say somethin....
Since George is on the road, as are Dana, Jules, Wayne and Steve and DJ to follow.....and of course all the rest of us......
The word of the day is HONORED - not honor - but HONORED
As I sit here printing off final emails, answering last minute requests, and giving the thumbs up to final expenditures, etc - all the job of a president....I come to an email with pictures of a fallen EMT and it all makes sense....this organization has heart, HUGE heart.
We aren't perfect. We try hard. We all have real jobs and lives. We get on each other's nerves - cuz we want the best, nothing else for you all and for those we are HONORED to ride for..... And we are all going on a bike ride....HONORED to honor those we knew, those we cared about, those we worked with - we are remembering the smiles, the jokes, the kids and significant others who came to visit at the station....we are a family of those whose families we many not even know - but we do.
I am HONORED to be riding this year for a 22 y.o. kid, who beat all odds as a premie neonate in 1989 with cardiac issues - he was supposed to die then like his twin brother did then. He had several special needs but just wanted to be "like everyone else" and a firefighter/EMT like his dad. His dad, Mark, forced to retire from local service due to heart issues and a friend of mine, said after the funeral, "Jen, I never thought I would get my helmet back, the helmet I gave my son, this way."
You know, the picture I saw was not anyone I know, but it has made me slow down tonight and breathe and prepare once again for the journey we engage in this weekend through next week.
All participants - STAY for the final ceremony - you will want to anyway - and be HONORED - you deserve it - those who left us or who have been sickened or injured deserve it.
I am HONORED
Pedal, Pedal, Pedal, -
Jennifer
