This is to any muddyangel but particularly those who made the "unofficial 911 ride" last Sept from Portland to Portsmouth. Just an fyi, Weeks Point has a cottage which just opened up. The family who has taken it for the past 17 years has decided not to take it this year, Camp #8. If you are interested in further info on it, feel free to email me at: robinweeks@comcast.net

I just wanted to provide some more information regarding the charitable deductions.  First (the disclaimer) - there are many different situations and each individual's situation is different - so for advice resulting to your specific situation, you should consult with your tax professional.     First things first, if you want to receive a charitable deduction, you need to itemize on your 1040 return.  [If you don't itemize, nor plan to, the deductions are irrelevent.]  Regarding the ride - you are able to deduct "travel expenses necessarily incurred while you are away from home performing services for a charitable organization ..."  This would include the lodging costs and gas/oil.  You are able to deduct the acutal costs of fuel and oil, or you may deduct $0.14 per mile.  Regardless of which option you choose, you can still deduct tolls and parking.  ****** Now the interesting part.  (I am not providing information as to how this organization handles these issues, but am providing basic information regarding rules for charitable contributions)  If a person (a non-participant) wishes to help a member defray some of their trip expenses, there is no problem with them providing funds to the member directly, however, the contributor would not be able to take a charitable deduction for that "contribution".  In order for a donor to receive a charitable deduction, they would need to contribute direclty to the organization and technically it cannot be contributed to a specific individual.  The huge key is to make sure the check does not have a person's name on it.  Many times, churches will have people participating on a missions trip raise funds for their portion of the trip.  If donors make the check payable to the church, and do not specify on the check that it is for a specified person, the donor may take the deduction.  It is up to the church to disburse the funds as they see fit.  Hope this helps.

Even your travel expenses to and from the ride are deductible.

IF you are raising money for the ride, it is a charitable event so any of your expenses incurred during the event that you are raising money for that are directly related to the event/ride should be tax deductable...we are a non-profit..but you might want to check with your tax person.

Hey, can anyone out there give me some idea what if any, expenses from the ride are deductable for taxes?

Delaware Muddy Angels - the WCBC Icycle metric is next Saturday leaving from the UDel Campus in Newark.  It is a good training ride because it covers terrain very similar to the terrain we will be covering in PA and MD this year (you will recognize the hill between Newark and Fair Hill that we rode last year).  A word of warning, however, if you are plnning on dong the 62, make sure you have enough food and water when you leave the lunch stop.  There were no rest stops after that when I did it a couple of years ago.

The weatherman is predicting temps and wind that will make the ride live up to its name!

See you there and Pedal Pedal Pedal

Thanks Patrick,  I wish I had 4 days to devote to this sport but I don't!  It was fun to try.  Do you telemark?  As for the bike... I am trying to ride at least an hour 4-5 days a week. I've experienced the sore seat before and it was not enjoyable.  Hopefully I'll make it the whole way.   I've never ridden a 100 mile day and I anticipate it might be tough.  It will be what it will be!  I am so excited I can't wait to start the ride!  Donna
