EMS United

Hi Guys (& Girls)

I am a UK (Health Professions Council) Paramedic, currently working as a freelance medic offshore and previously worked with the Scottish Ambulance Service and I have been thinking about converting my UK Paramedic status over to a US / NREMT-P equivalent, is there anyone out there who has done this or could at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Andrew

Hi Andy,

As an ex pat I would love to help but I think you are entering a minefield; I am actually trying the reverse-reciprocity from US to UK. Are things that bad over there? They are pretty bad over here at present. I left the UK 7 years ago and started my career in EMS over here; at present I am a CCEMT-P. It appears no one is hiring. My advice-check out the systems over here before you commit. I am also a NREMT-P ('Nationally Registered') but protocols differ from state to state (50) and county to county; I have worked 3 states and studied 3 separate protocol books. So much for national?

Wish you all the best, hope to hear from you soon.

Pete.

Cheers Pete for the advice, I am not actually looking to work in the US but just looking to get my UK Paramedic converted to US / NREMT-P status so that when I am applying for jobs offshore I have a better chance as a lot of places will not accept UK but will take NREMT-P. Where did you study for your CCEMT-P?

I hope that you get your qualifications converted over okay in the UK and that you find yourself a job easily enough.

Cheers again,

Andrew

Hi Andrew and Pete,

I read you thread with much interest as we are often being asked for advice on such issues.  It is not an area that we have much knowledge of as our main focus is providing a CPD portfolio service, however we do get asked various questions from time to time that we struggle to answer.

If you would be interested we would be really pleased if you would write a short article for our newsletter about your work in the US and offshore, why you need certain qualifications and why the UK HPC Registration is not as well recognised.

If you would like to write something for our free e-newsletter please email me at sam@cpdme.com
